The Engage Support Connect (ESC) Program is an early intervention program run by a multi-disciplinary team within the Northern Territory (NT) Police.
The ESC acknowledges that people often engage in violent extremist content, groups and activities to fulfill unmet needs. We acknowledge that this can be harmful to both the people engaging in violent extremism, as well as those around them.
The ESC is a voluntary program that aims to assist individuals who may be involved with, or at risk of radicalisation toward violent extremism. Individuals within the program can withdraw their consent at any time.
The program aims to reduce the influence of violent extremism by providing a range of tailored support services focused on identified strengths and skill building. The program does not attempt to alter or influence political, religious, or ideological beliefs of an individual.
Individuals in the program work collaboratively with a specialist case manager towards mutually agreed upon goals, with a focus on skill development, while building protective supports that help develop a positive sense of identity, belonging and self-worth.
The ESC program also has the capacity to work with family members and other organisations, where appropriate to best support the person in the community.
The ESC program has access to a broad range of resources in the community to assist individuals in working toward their goals which can include areas such as education, physical health, employment and mental health supports.
