Step Together is a helpline and digital support service for people seeking advice on how to support loved ones and protect them from negative violent extremist interest. Caregivers are best placed to notice any small changes in an individual. It's important to trust your instincts and if you’re worried, reach out for advice. In a safe and collaborate space, qualified support workers will promote awareness and understanding, and connect you with appropriate support services in your community.

There are a number of reasons behind people becoming radicalised and then extremists, and the causes are complex and unique to every individual. There is no one pathway to violent extremism although it’s often set in motion through a desire for social connection. Keep up to date on this fluid and complex landscape.

Staying safe online

One third of young people have reported being exposed to online content promoting terrorism. It takes an average of 23 minutes for young men to be exposed to misogynistic content on TikTok and YouTube shorts, regardless of whether they were searching for it. These worrying statistics highlight the importance of understanding what material our children or loved ones are consuming.
